I must confess my heart started beating just a little faster when I saw The Grand Master has got an IMDB page... I realise it doesn't have any actual meaning, but still!

Hello, btw :D I've been lurking around this forum for a while. I'm a 25 year old translator of Chinese and have been in love with WKW since I saw Chunking Express for the first time in a movie theatre in 2005. Nice to meet you all!

I guess my complaining to IMDB finally paid off!

Tony Leung Chiu Wai while training for the soon to start production THE GRAND MASTER (YUT DOI JUNG SI) suffered a broken left arm. After a few days of rest at home, Wai Jai yesterday returned to work with a magazine photo shoot. Wai Jai expressed that right now his training has to stop completely until his arm naturally heals. Yet he still had a little fun at his own expense. He joked that right now he cannot move and can only play "dead" at home.

Since Wai Jai's injury, the press has been waiting outside his home. Yesterday Wai Jai finally returned. When Wai Jai got out of his vehicle, his assistants were very nervous and reminded reporters not to bump into Wai Jai. When asked how his injury was, Wai Jai said, "OK. It will take four to six weeks to recover." Wai Jai pointed out that the bone had to grow back together before he could move.

Was Carina Lau Ka Ling very worried? Wai Jai said, "She has nothing to worry about. It's very normal, this is an action film." He pointed out that now his left arm could not move. Because one of two bones were broken he could not even turn his arm. As for treatment, he said, "It doesn't need treatment. It still hurts even after taking pain killers because it's broken. Now I take Chinese herbal medicine at night, during the day I can't move, like I am playing dead." Was he worried about hindering the production? Wai Jai said that he had no way to worry and it was beyond his control. Now he has to wait for the bone to heal. Was director Wong Kar Wai very understanding? Wai Jai joked, "If he isn't, what can he do?" As for going to the doctors again, Wai Jai said, "I have to wait for the broken bone to heal, for now there is nothing to see the doctor for. I have to wait four to six weeks. After it heals then we will take another x-ray on it. If it is truly healed then I can move again."

Wai Jai expressed that the photo shoot was originally scheduled for the 15th, but because the photographer had to go elsewhere the shoot took place yesterday. Because he could not move too much, he needed accommodation. The photographer did not want him to have too tough a time and quickly finished. As for when he would return to work, he said, "When it heals." He pointed out that now he cannot train because his arm still hurts. The pain will linger for several weeks. When it does not hurt then he can start with basic training like running. If it does not hurt then he can first train the lower half of his body. The upper half and arms have to wait.

Reporter: How's your injury now?
Tony: OK.
Reporter: How long do the doctors say it will take for it to heal?
Tony: 4 to 6 weeks.
Reporter: When can you start martial arts training again?
Tony: I have to wait for the bone to heal first, because right now I can't even move it.
Reporter: Was Carina worried?
Tony: Not really, things like this happen.
Tony: I don't take pain killers; they don't really help anyway. I use Chinese medication at night.
Reporter: : Do you have to go back for check ups?
Tony: Check ups? Because the bone is broken, I have to wait for the bone to grow back so the broken pieces can attach itself together. Right now there's not a lot to see. In another 4 to 6 weeks when it has healed, I will go back for x-rays. Then I will be able to move it.

"Both Wilson Yip's Ip Man 2 and Wong Kar Wai's The Great Master are slated for production next month.

Budgeted at 100m yuan, Ip Man 2 traces Yip Man's life as he arrives in Hong Kong. Raymond Wong reveals that Donnie Yen's pay has doubled since the first film, commanding around 15m to 20m yuan. Ip Man 3 is currently in the process of being written, and it will have bigger focus on Bruce Lee.

According to Yip Chun, production of Wong Kar Wai's The Great Master is expected to begin "on schedule", as Tony Leung's arm fracture won't affect or delay filming.

Young Ip Man/Ip Man the Prequel (unrelated), which explores the early parts of Yip Man's life, is expected to begin production in November, with Herman Yau directing, and tentatively, To Yu Hang would be playing the eponymous kungfu master, while Yip Chun would be making his debut as Leung Bik."

This is getting ridiculous.
A third Ip Man biopic, not to mention a 40-episode TV series.
Yip-sploitation gone mad!

'The Grand Master' will start filming in September; Chang Chen to play Bruce Lee

As 'Ip Man 2' will start filming tomorrow in Guangdong, Wong Kar Wai's 'The Grand Master' cannot be pushed back any further. Yesterday, reporters learned from Jet Tone Films that 'The Grand Master' will start filming in September. Aside from having Tony Leung and Brigitte Lin, Chang Chen will be playing the role of Bruce Lee in the movie.

Yesterday (August 8th) was the first National Fitness Day in China. Chang Chen surprisingly appeared at the Tai Chi event in front of the Bird Nest stadium. Joining 34,000 people, he took part and performed the 24-style Tai Chi exercise. It set a Guinness World Record for the most people practicing Tai Chi at the same time.

Why did Chang Chen suddenly start practicing Tai Chi? As a matter of fact, he has been undergoing martial arts training in Mainland China to prepare of the role in 'The Grand Master'. How has his training been going? According to the former headmaster of the Beijing Martial Arts School, Master Wu (master of Jet Li), expressed that Chang Chen has great potential and is very suited for martial arts.

According to insider information on the 'The Grand Master', Wong Kar Wai decided to cast his favourite male actors, Chang Chen and Tony Leung for the roles of Bruce Lee and Yip Man respectively. Apparently choosing an actor to play Bruce Lee was a difficult process for Wong Kar Wai. He took many considerations into account and finally settled on Chang Chen because he had acted as Bruce Lee before. "A few years ago, Wong Kar Wai directed a music video for DJ Shadow. Chang Chen portrayed Bruce Lee in the MV."

'Ip Man 2', starring Donnie Yen officially started shooting yesterday. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for 'The Grand Master', which was originally set to film seven years ago. During a practice session with five Wing Chun masters a few weeks ago, Tony broke his arm. Currently he is still waiting for his arm to heal. Although Donnie Yen's film has once again taken a head start, Tony is not worried. For a movie he's already waited seven years for, another few weeks won't make a difference. Right now he's waiting for his doctor's approval before he starts training again. Once he's given the all clear, he will resume work. His arm no longer sported any bandages, so it seems his recovery is going well. Tony was also driving by himself and looked rather dashing. Although he appears to have lost weight, he still looked very fit, perhaps due to his prior training.
Tony Leung said that "the fracture of his arm has cured now, but it will still take a few more weeks for the teared muscle around the bone to be completely recovered. At the moment he can move his arm but it is still very painful when he use his arm muscle. That's why he has to wait for a few weeks before starting Kung Fu training again."

I didn't know about that music video before, but I suppose it's this one:
http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XOTg4ODA4ODA=.html ?

Don't really see how he's "portraying Bruce Lee", except for doing some martial arts. Anyway, I like him, so good news!

I've seen the video many times, but I didn't know Chang Chen was supposed to be Bruce Lee. Although, there was the whole light bulb-kicking thing, if I remember correctly.

Nice to see some confirmation of Chang Chen. Sounds like Lin is a lock too? Great if true. Shooting in a month, I'd think we'd here some more details on the crew by now, notably Wong's DP for this project.

$20 says he's doing last minute negotiations with Doyle.

But I think Doyle's working with Stanley Kwan right now, if I'm not mistaken.

Kwan's film has been shooting for a while now though, correct? I'm sure by the time The Grand Master begins production, or shortly thereafter Doyle would be free to work again. *fingers crossed*

Chang Chen trained in martial arts for six months in Beijing.
He would practice for six hours a day in the park.
He does not know which role he will play in the film.
His latest film is opposite his father, they last appeared together in A Brighter Summer Day.

Wong Kar-wai arrived in Venice yesterday (for the Venice Film Festival) and was preparing to attend Louis Vuitton party this evening. He said Tony's arm is now completely recovered and he is going to shoot "The Grand Master" soon. Brigitte Lin's character in "The Grand Master" is top secret.
