On my recent trip to Argentina, I decided to visit some of the locations used in Happy Together.
This is of Bar Sur, located in the San Telmo barrio of Buenos Aires. I was only able to get an outside pic because this place doesn't open till night, and plus I wanted to avoid the cover charges. The place is said to be a tourist trap.
Iguazu Falls. This place is a must for anyone visiting Argentina. It takes a whole day to explore and you really do get soaked. The movie was right; it's shouldn't be viewed alone.
The building in the back used to be Cosmos Hotel. A lady working there said they changed names a few years ago. It's located in the Constitucion barrio of Buenos Aires. Not exactly an area you'd want to travel alone.
Chino Central. This is the Chinese restaurant where Lai Yiu Fai worked. It's also the one shown in Buenos Aires Zero Degrees. The owner saw me loitering outside and came out to talk to me. I asked her about Wong Kar Wai and she was quick to confirm the use of her restaurant in the movie. It is located in the Microcenter barrio of Buenos Aires.
After eating inside Chino Central, I asked the owner if I could take a picture of the kitchen. They were real friendly and even let me wear their hat. To my surprise, kitchen was actually pretty small. This picture is taken from the same angle where Lai Yiu Fai used the phone. Unfortunately the phone wasn't there.
Another location I found was the bar 3 Amigos where Lai Yiu Fai cried into the recorder. I couldn't get a picture of the inside because it was closed when I got there in the morning. This bar is located in the La Boca barrio of Buenos Aires, which is also where Lai Yiu Fai's apartment was located. From the movie, you can see him get off of bus #29 heading to Boca. This area is actually really ghetto. Once I got off the bus while searching for this bar, an old lady came up behind me and told me to immediately go towards the touristy area. She spoke real fast and I was only able to recognize the word 'peligroso', which means 'dangerous', repeated many times. What I also wanted to see was the bridge they walked on where Lai Yiu Fai got sick. Unfortunately, it was also in a dangerous neighborhood and I had to catch my plane ride back. Other than the pictures, I was able to bring back the bottle that Lai Yiu Fai keeps drinking out of. It's called Bols. The lamp of the waterfall was no where to be seen and the Le Mans cigarettes come in a different package.
