I dig the positive quote they managed to hunt down from the internationally respected critic... Dennis Dermody..

Well, to be fair to the film, one of its biggest supporters is Andrew Sarris. But, yeah, that does make one wonder why they didn't just use a quote from him...

I totally like MBN, but the dialogue was a bit cheesy, and Norah seemed a little out of her comfort zone, but I saw it twice and the audience both times were really receptive and seemed to like it.

I finally saw this last week. I would love to loop the close-up shots of the pies and just watch those scenes for an hour. Mmmmmmmm.

I'll keep this one short and sweet: I didn't really like the film and thought this was a good example of why artists shouldn't try to copy themselves. There were so many of his old characters in this one that I couldn't focus on the story.

Anyway...let me try and read this whole thread before I have to clock back into work.

What I've found in Wong Kar Wei's most recent films, 2046 and MBN in particular are the expression of the context of his life. They are deeply personal themes, which he has converted to multiple characters and storylines. Like taking a well established artist from one environment to another, or taking a cast of mostly british bods into an american film having to pull off american accents or the many reflections he manages to create, amusingly some of them being gorgeous women :D All of which do quite well. Jude... I'm really not sure whether his delivery was deliberate or lax, it appears that awkward unlike his female cast members. I maybe wrong, but it helped me to enjoy these films more as I can imagine him being a little smarter and feeling closer to him.

Why criticise him for 'cliche' shots? Closeups are so cliche! These are just his techniques for expressing, stop looking at the finger or you'll miss the heavenly glory!

Can't wait for the next WKW movie. But I'd have to agree with others around about Nikole Kidman... but then he might have a genius role for her, which she might do well. She was well cast in golden compass.

I actually quite liked Jude Law in My Blueberry Nights. I seem to be the only one.

I actually liked him too, but just found the material pretty bland. Portman was the one who I couldn't stand.

'what are you giving this to me foooor?' was the absolute worst moment for me..

i didn't find jude law bad. i just found him to be more of a prop than the driving male character that we've come to expect...

i thought jude law was boring, not necessarily bad.

although, sometimes being boring is worse than being bad.

Considering the other British actresses managed to pull off consistent accents for their American characters and Jude was incapable of doing a particular british accent and he's british too lead me to not find his performance nearly as convincing as Natalie's or Rachel's. He didn't 'inhabit' his character enough for me. A drifting accent and would do that :) I really liked him in other films like Gattaca and The Talented Mr Ripley, but he wasn't challenged on accents in either. He was really lacking in any intensity, unlike say Christian Bale who manages to accomplsih this every time, playing a very diverse range of characters. But it's ok, cos he makes the other players shine :)
