So I just saw Ashes last night at the UCI Edwards and I'm not sure if im in the minority, but I like the Redux more than the original...It seemed to have a quicker pace than the original release and the stories a little more cohesive, or maybe watching it on the big screen made it that much better. And am I right, is it shorter as well, I was expecting a longer movie and I believe it was only about 90 minutes long? What did everyone else think of it?

I saw Redux a few weeks ago when it first came out here in the UK. It had been a while since I had last seen AoT prior to that. So I don't know... I thought Redux was good, but not as great as I remember the original being. Whether or not that is down to my opinion or tastes changing, I'm not sure. I did think that the film's emotion impact was lost by making it more straight forward.

I really need to re-watch my old DVD copy to come to some better conclusion...

Thats funny cause I went with some friends who hadn't seen it, and they were wondering how the original film could've been more confusing than this one.

Am I the only person who didn't find the original Ashes of Time confusing at all?

This really needs to open up in Mad City before I go on a rampage. We're supposed to be one of the most progressive cities in the nation, why can't we be more progressive in the films we get?

You might be! I barely seem to understand the plot after watching Redux....

Yep. You must be VERY clever.

I followed the film well enough (perhaps) but a lot of detail was lost on me. I had to watch it a few times but I was never into the film enough to really give a shit.

I found the original confusing on first viewing, but watching it a second and third time it all fell into place.
I think that's the beauty of it. Much like the petals of a flower, unfolding.
Hopefully that feeling isn't lost with Redux.

He didn't give it a bad review... he just seemed to have the same problem with understanding it that most other people had.

You can't look for one overarching plot or narrative in Ashes of Time. If you follow each individual character, there are many individual plots.

It's worked its way to Des Moines... maybe Madison in a few weeks? God dammit.

I love Ebert. I really, really do. He's usually excellent at what he does (which isn't film scholarship, but strictly film review). But that really is one of the silliest reviews he's written.
