I agree. After reading the S&S review I'm rather optimistic in regards to the new cut though. I'm actually looking forward to seeing this!

I decided to get the Mei Ah DVD of the original, even though it's shite quality. Hell, for a movie like Ashes of Time, I wouldn't mind double dipping if a better version would eventually come out someday.

But I'm also feeling a bit more optimistic about Redux.

Agreed x2. I didn't really like the way the S&S article said it was more 'accessible' - it didn't need to be. All they had to do was sort the subs out so they didn't confuse things, possibly pseudo-translate idioms which most people wouldn't understand (e.g. get rid of 'insects awaken' and say Spring instead) and I would be happy as larry.

What's the noise on this release in Asia? Have they not even suggested a new title (i.e. is it just going to be called 東邪西毒 again)?

WTF?!?! Check out the trailer: http://www.sonyclassics.com/ashesoftime ... ailer.html

About two-thirds of the way through the subs give Leslie the line, 'I always thought that I had won.'

That's not what he says! He actually says, 'I used to be just like you.' Doesn't whoever is doing the subs realise that it's all about the nuances and resonances with this film? Screw up the subs and you screw all the resonances bar the visual ones.

Incidentally, 'I always thought that I had won' sounds like a resonance of Maggie's conversation with Tony LKF. But... it shouldn't. Because that's not what Leslie said

hehe...

I like the way that having Redux different from the original wasn't the stated aim. 'There’s lots of things we had to give up.' Maybe a subtle shift from his previous position? If he is a smart businessman in a few months time he'll miraculously find enough original footage to complete a remastered original - after everyone has bought the Redux DVD/Blu-ray.

there is some truth about having to give up some footage, which was lost forever since the original camera negative and audio elements were not well-preserved or the prints that were found are in awful shape. the same thing happened recently on THE GODFATHER restoration, where retakes or unused trimmed shots replaced the ones in the original cut since those were lost forever due to incompetence and short-sided vision in regards to preservation of the original negative and elements.

bottom line… circumstance decided some revisions on AOT, not by wkw’s choice—but i’m sure wkw took creative advantage whenever there was an opportunity to revise AOT!

I kind of like the new idea about having the film go season by season, although it does seem like a bit like borrowing from Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring.

i just got back from the new york film festival screening of ashes of time redux.

i'm not as hardcore into ashes of time as the other people in the board, so the changes weren't as apparent to me. but those have been well chronicled on this thread already.

i will say though that the film looked incredibly beautiful, and it was an extreme pleasure to see it on a huge screen.

there was a q+a afterwards with wkw, christopher doyle, AND super special guest brigitte lin.

doyle was particularly hilarious. he stood up several times and said he was "off to the bar." he also said he'd only take questions from females, and after he gave one answer, he said to the crowd, "this is where you clap."

brigitte lin said it was sometimes torture working with wkw, but the result is so beautiful that it was all worth it.

wkw recapped the night by telling that story of christopher doyle drunk on the last day of shooting during ashes of time. there was one funny exchange where doyle said, "i couldn't find any of the six cameras." wkw responded with, "there were only three cameras, you've been shooting too many hollywood movies."

all in all, thoroughly worthwhile night. going to see the q+a with jim hoberman tomorrow, we'll see how that is.
