I just watched this movie today... It wasn't the 1st Wong's film that I watched.
I watched ChungKing Express and In The Mood For Love and parts of Happy Together and now 2046.

To tell you the truth, I thought the film was beautiful, colorful and very poetic. The shots were great and cinematic, the actors and actresses did a great job. But I feel like the movie was too long! And in addition, I think that the movie was missing something too... I felt like it's not completed. But maybe that what's Wong tried to convey to his audience?

I like how all the characters all connected somehow...

This is just my opinion though. I'm studying abroad in London and taking a film class and I chose to write about Wong. I'd love to read your comments, so please keep them comming!
Thanks!

i think wong kar wai's films are meant not to be completed (no definite and clear ending). By the way, why didn't you finish Happy Together? Welcome to wkw.net :)

We watched it in our class, and we didn't have time. And the professor didn't really want us to finish the whole movie anyway because she just wanted to show his styles. :D

It was because she didn't want to have any of her students cry in class. :P

For me, 2046 was almost flawless. Especially when you consider and appreciate all the delicate story arcs and character histories (starting in Days of Being Wild). Take a look at the 2046 wiki article here. It's good stuff.

I think something new can be taken from this film every time you watch it.

2046 is probably one of the best movie ever made. the way it was crafted is indeed almost flawless. Wong is putting elements together in a visual and auditive way that flirts with experimental techniques and conventionnal narration. But that's not all, as some may already know, Wong is always adding the history layer in filigrane. since hong-kong was given back in 1997 by England and it was said that nothing would change in the system until 2046-2047 Wong tought about ways of putting it into a film (well he's doing it since as tears go by but still). In that sense the character of chow is prisonner of this never changing place, of this prison. but since it is not true that nothing changes and also since the character itself goes away from that place (first under the character of tak then on its own) wong tells us what he thinks about all that. i'm no chinese historian but i read a lot on wong kar wai and a bit on chinese history so when i see a work like that where everything we see can be referenced to reality i'm just plainly stunned. and, to finish, i do not think that the movie is too long but rather that he wanted us to feel the long time passing. wouldn't we find the time passing by slowly in a never changing world???

Hmm, there's no sticky thread for 2046 so I'll put it here. Untranslated interviews about 2046:

I've always felt that 2046 was Wong Kar Wai's best narrative, but not necessarily his best movie.

My favorite WKW film. Tony Leung is an acting god.

That's all a part of Wong Kar Wai's genius. Each movie complete's the preceding one. Chow (Tony Leung) never really becomes complete as he desires but it doesn't stop Leung's character from developing. Like Lulu (Carina Lau) he never surrenders to his sorrow. And sadly like her he's a ghost from the past. Many fans want these characters to find happiness as the character Wang Jing Wen (Faye Wong) does after reading Chow's story 2047. You also can't help seeing Chow as a portrayal of Wong Kar Wai as he moves from one tragic love affair after another. At some level you might despise Chow for becoming the embodiment of Leslie Cheung's character Yuddy. But we see him trying to redeem himself at the end by compelling Wang Jing Wen to act on her love rather than letting fear or circumstance decide her fate.
