Tony Leung revealed he is about to start filming in June on director Wong Kar Wai's biopic about Ip Man, the kungfu master who taught martial arts legend Bruce Lee.

He said: "We're at a very exciting stage now, in the middle of pre-production work. I'm working hard everyday, finding the character, doing physical kungfu training, and reading a lot about Ip Man himself."

Seems like with every piece of news the shooting date is pushed back another month or so. :) Oh well, I'm unbelievably excited for this just the same.

And Jeffrey, I've been reading these forums for a long time now and just decided to start posting, but I wanted to say that you're fantastic in bringing all the relevant news stories to the forefront here. Great work.

Another casting rumor...
Wong Kar-Wai confirmed to start filming The Grand Master in June. He will possibly invite Gong Li to be the leading lady and the script is not written yet:
Yip Man’s son revealed Wong Kar-Wai’s idea to cast Gong Li while giving an interview recently, but the casting idea is unconfirmed by others associated with the project.

"Ip Chun, son of Wing Chun's grandmaster Ip Man, said, Wong Kar Wai's version of movie "Ip Man" will start its shooting in June this year and Gong Li may be the female lead of the movie instead of Brigitte Lin. However, Gong will not be acting as Ip Man's wife but a female master of another form of martial art from Foshan. In Wong's version of the movie, titled "The Grand Master", Ip Man's wife will not be featured. If this is true, Lin, who was initially rumored to be taking on the role, will not be making appearance. However, Ip Chun was caution with his words during the interview and said that Wong has not finalized his script and Gong's role has yet to be confirmed.

Ip Chun expressed regret that Donnie Yen's version of "Ip Man" was not filmed in Foshan; he also said he will attempt to get Wong to film "The Grand Master" in Foshan so as to drive tourism to the area. Ip thus invited Wong to Foshan to experience their rich martial arts culture and for research purposes.

Male lead of "The Grand Master" Tony Leung verified in an interview with Hong Kong media that the film will be shot in June. "My current task is to be practicing Wing Chun diligently," he said. With respect to the comparison between Yen and himself, Leung was humble and said that his skills cannot be compared to Yen. "I believe that Wilson Yip and Wong Kar Wai's versions will be very different as they have different strengths and skills in moviemaking," Leung said."

"Owing to tight schedule, Taiwanese pop idol Jay Chou had to decline offer to cast as his own idol, Bruce Lee, in Wong Kar Wai's movie "The Grand Master". Besides Wong's proposal, Wilson Yip, director of "Ip Man 2" has also specifically named Chou to take on the role as Bruce Lee in his movie; Chou's company JVR Music however commented that they have yet to received Yip's invite. Chou's heavy involvement as director and male lead actor in his own sci-fi drama production "Panda Heroes" formed part of the reason why he could not take on Wong's movie."

I am looking forward "The Grand Master" !
Tony Leung Chiu Wai in main character is (for me) most important - but WKW knows always very well whom he prefers for which role - substitutes too!
Let´s trust his unique taste !
Austrian Greetings !

"Tony is busy practising Wing Chun everyday. Tony's kungfu master and his assistants visit Tony everyday, and practised with Tony at his home.

According to Ip Man's son, WKW invited Master Leung, who was introduced to Ip Man to learn Wing Chun by Bruce Lee, to teach Tony Wing Chun. And Master Leung's assistants would practise Wing Chun with Tony. Tony started his class since last October, and practised 4 hours a day, and he improved a lot since then. The reporter can even hear the sound of practising across the wall! Ip Man's son was surprised of Tony's improvement. He said he worried that Tony would not practising hard, but to his surprise, Tony is very serious, and improved very fast.

Ip Man's son revealed that WKW planned to shoot the movie in Foshan, Ip Man's hometown. "

Apparently Chang Chen has been training for about a month for this film, although he doesn't know which role he is going to take.

Talk about Yip-sploitation!

WKW may be doing The Grand Master, but they'll also be two more projects regarding Yip Man.

Wilson Yip and Donnie Yen will be making Ip Man 2 later this year and there's also plans to do a 40-episode TV series.

Chang Chen could replace Tony Leung Chiu-Wai in The Grand Master.
Zhao Benshan will likely join the cast but denies Annie Yi will participate.

Another TV series? I remember the Donnie Yen ATV one from the 90s - complete with sped-up fight scenes.
