I kinda agree with alot of the recent posts, while I love Happy Together, its not one of my fave WKW films, I cant really explain why, so I kinda agree with Panda 9D. I think I will quote you everytime I'm asked why I like a certain movie.

I don't know what there is to dislike about Happy Together. I've only seen it once, but's it's definitely a film I will rewatch for years to come. And what is this about not liking the characters? I thought Tony and Leslie were very real in it. Like others have said, it was a very raw film, and that appealed to me. I'm surprised no one has mentioned the scene where Tony and Chang are in the bar together. Chang leaves Tony the tape-recorder while he goes to the toilet or something, and all Tony can do is cry into it. That was a very powerful scene for me.

There was so much I took in from the first watching of HT, and I'm sure there will be so much more to come in my future rewatches. An excellent film.

HT may not be my number one favorite wkw film, because it's too difficult to choose one over another, but it is one of my favorite films -- by any director ever!! HT is not a gay love story; its just a love story between two people. Any human being over 25 years old can identify with one or both of these characters at some time in their life. It's a beautiful movie. Leslie was perfect in his role and Tony was perfect in his. I think Leslie was one of the finest actors who ever lived. All of his performances, especially this one, was so heart-felt -- so on target! And Tony was just superb as his long-suffering lover. My favorite scene in the whole movie was when they danced together in the kitchen. It was understated and just so lovely. And when Tony brushed the hair from Leslie's forehead as Leslie slept -- it was so beautiful. How can anyone watch this movie and not be touched by the all-to-familiar story and the magnificent performances?

"Andy Lau said his fans would accept him playing a homosexual character. He said he had been ready to take a part in Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai's "Happy Together" — the story of two gay lovers who escape to Argentina — but he opted out because of disagreements over the production timetable."

Ufff! This is my first visit to this website and I'm surprised about this comment about the "forced acting" of Tony Leung. Personally his performance in this movie is one of the greatest I haver ever seen. Anyway I think it's wonderful to share all the points of views we have about my always beloved WKW. :D

"Happy Together" is great to me, because I love the "Scorsese edge" to it. So much of this has that raw, "street" feel to it; and the use of the soundtrack, with the imagery, is just perfect. (I particularly loved the first two uses of footage with "Chunga's Revenge." Heavenly!) Mostly, what I love, are the performances - best thing about it. Tony and Leslie NAILED it. This film really showed what Leung is made of - again, a character out of Scorsese. I can't fault his choices anywhere - everything he chose to do in his performance was completely justified, Leslie Cheung's performance made sure of that. Lol! (Who wouldn't lose their temper, at the drop of a hat, if Po-Wing was the one dropping the hat???) Lol!

The first time I saw this film, I thought of it as a three star movie. I kept going back, though. Now, it's a five star movie, in my mind. It seems the more time I invested in it, the richer it became, same with "In the Mood for Love." The more I gave, the more I was rewarded. :-)
